# 2024-02-28 Antisemitic Graffiti in Barnard Restrooms

Antisemitic and anti-Israel graffiti was scrawled in a number of Barnard restrooms, including on the first floor of Milstein building ([__photo1__](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JhjtnDyeg8uZGqT0bNNnD_4NgVu8fhz7/view?usp=drive_link), [__photo2__](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Jh8-d9M_tjoNdlMt2w9Jul2N0LP7_BHe/view?usp=drive_link)).

According to the [__video__](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JVhHfvGcn2-s2btd7dROB_HVDo8SMCXK/view?usp=drive_link) posted by the [__Faculty for Justice in Palestine__](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LBgYKZOHsMx-dhVFViVf9Tl7saGN8hBZ/view?usp=drive_link) on 2/28/2024, Barnard administration had some (but not all!) of the graffiti painted over without notifying anyone or making any statement about it.

This graffiti, which [__includes__](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JYjKw91Mx9DWwGzZ3agJsSmDxCK2dgeQ/view?usp=drive_link) [__Nazi SS Bolts__](https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/ss-bolts) and “[__Resist by any means necessary__](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JhjtnDyeg8uZGqT0bNNnD_4NgVu8fhz7/view?usp=drive_link)” with an inverted red triangle that [__symbolizes__](https://extremismterms.adl.org/glossary/inverted-red-triangle) targeting of Jews by Palestinian terrorists, is threatening to Jews and Israelis on campus. A Jewish-Israeli person affiliated with Columbia notified the 26th precinct of the police only to be advised that the police could not and would not do anything. Later the police advised that they were also notified by Columbia, even though Columbia made no public statement about the graffiti.

Including Nazi and terrorist symbology constitutes a hate crime and yet neither Barnard administration nor the police have done anything about it. This is in sharp contrast with an [__incident__](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/swastikas-spray-painted-columbia-university-professor-s-office-n941751) in 2018 when a police opened a hate crime investigation after a swastika was discovered painted on the walls of a Columbia building.
