On August 10, Barnard College’s IG and X accounts featured a photo with a link to an article regarding a student who translated literature for ArabLit from Arabic to English (or vice versa). The photo used on social media included the student and a physical copy of ArabLit that featured a cover of the map of Israel (IG post, X post).

Members of the pro-Israel community, including numerous who revealed themselves to be alums of Barnard College, left comments on Barnard’s IG and X posts expressing their concern about the map. The comments largely consisted of issues about the Arabic language not being native to Israel (Hebrew is native to Israel, which is modern day Judea Samaria) and that the map erases Israel as a Jewish state. Many also claimed that the map spreads antisemitism. Some requested that the IG and X posts be removed due to their antisemitic nature.

Some members of the pro-Hamas community left antisemitic comments on the post as well, claiming the map was a map of Palestine.

On August 11, Barnard College deleted all the comments (both the antisemitic ones and every comment by pro-Israel individuals) on its IG post. The college left a comment, claiming the comments were removed because they violated the school’s anti-harassment policy. The college turned off comments thereafter. The school deleted the post on X and left a post claiming it was done so due to harassment of the student. Individuals commented on the X post, expressing their outrage at the college for its antisemitism and lack of understanding of the map issue.
