During Columbia University’s first day of classes for the fall 2024 semester, there were several disruptions in front of Columbia’s gates, Barnard’s gates, and at the alma mater. 

The picket outside of Columbia’s gates on 116th and Broadway was advertised on social media: Substack post (here), CUAD instagram stories (here), advertised by WOL (here).

Dozens of people were walking in circles, chanting, and banging on drums in front of Columbia’s main gates. This resulted in clashes with NYPD (here) and long lines to get into campus (here, here).  Many protestors were covered in kefiyahs, big goggles, and masks, as well as some with the armbands that usually identify the leaders (here). Several handouts were passed out including “We refuse to trade in the blood of Palestinians, and until Columbia commits to full financial disclosure and complete divestment from Zionist apartheid, occupation, and genocide – we do not deserve a first day of school.” and “ “there is only one solution. Intifada revolution.”(here)  and “Glory to Gaza” (here). 

Chants included “Resistance is glorious” (here), “From the sea to the sea, Palestine is Arab” chanted in Arabic (here).  Signs included “divest or you’re next” (here), “Long live the intifada” (here), NYPD car on fire (here). There were also many UAW signs (here, here, here, here). A two hour video posted by SJP on x (here) included many other chants such as “Palestine is our demand, no peace on stolen land,” “Off our university– IOF, NYPD” (30:40), “There is only one solution, intifada revolution” (31:18), “Students students make us proud - take another building down” (31:30), “Settlers, settlers go back home. Palestine is ours alone,” “Tell us what you’re fighting for - intifada, people’s war,” “Long live hind’s hall. Every fascist state will fall,” “Long live hind’s hall. Columbia you will fall,” “Resistance is glorious. We will be victorious” (57:19), “Say it loud, say it clear. We don’t want no zionists here” (1:07:00), “If we don’t get no justice, they don’t get no peace” (1:13:25), “Intifada intifada. Long live the intifada” (1:48:00).
