Several Columbia University student groups publicized a “walkout” on October 7th, 2024 “to answer WOL’s call to flood NYC for Palestine!” (CUAD instagram post). See fliers and protest announcements here. CUAD’s official announcement on instagram (screenshots here) included the logo of Within Our Lifetime (screenshot) and included “safety” instructions to avoid identification. In addition, many Columbia University student groups encouraged all to attend the Within Our Lifetime Protest (screenshot).
The Columbia Encampment telegram post encouraging students to attend this walkout reads “Just last night, Palestinian resistance fighters escalated for their liberation – resisting through over a hundred years of zionist aggression and a year of the most intense bombardment the world has seen. We must recognize our liberations as connecting and bring the war home” (screenshot).
The “walkout” began on the low steps with chants of “There is only one solution. Intifada revolution” (here, 2:15). The leaders went over “Safety guidelines” to advise the protesters how to not be identified (here). At 2:14, the leader says “We are not engaging with zionists today.” There were many different chants with “intifada” (here) as well as “one solution revolution,” “If we don’t get no justice, then they don’t get no peace,” and “it is right to rebel- Israel go to hell” (here). Their chants (here) also included in Arabic, “From water to water Palestine will be Arab,” “One solution revolution” (2:45), “Students students make us proud, take another building down” (3:45), “Palestine is our demand. No peace on stolen land” (4:27). Additionally, they chanted, “Resistance is justified when people are occupied” (here, 0:59).
Some posters include “Zionisms end days” (here) as well as “Long live the al aqsa flood” and “Glory to the resistance” (here). The leaders praised October 7th during a speech (here).
At about 12:50pm, the protesters started marching around campus (here). They can be seen moving barricades at 2:47. As they proceeded to march around campus, they chanted “there is only one solution, intifada revolution” accompanied by very loud drums. Additional chants (here) included “Intifada intifada. Long live the intifada,” “Palestine is our demand. No peace on stolen land,” “It is right to rebel. Israel go to hell,” (1:50) and “Resistance is glorious. And we will be victorious” (2:07). This video highlights the large number of protesters marching and the way in which they obstructed other students from getting around campus. The marching continued (here). Protestors marched (here) toward an art exhibit memorializing those killed on October 7th as well as the hostages (here). They chanted “shut it down!” and “Resistance is glorious, we will be victorious”.
When the marching finished, the protestors went back to the barricaded area on Low steps to continue chanting (here and here).
As the protesters leave the barricaded area to get off campus at the end of the protest, Jewish students are standing near the exit. One says “Let us mourn in peace” (here, 0:27).
