CUAD announced a protest outside of SIPA at 5pm to “protest Columbia’s genocidal events” as part of national SJP’s international university day of action against genocide.
In the announcement post on social media, #CUAD writes, “Columbia University and all its schools, the IGP, the Kraft Center, and guest speaker Barak Ravid are all MANUFACTURERS OF GENOCIDE….”. See post here and screenshots here. The flier was shared by several other Columbia student groups and social media accounts including tcabolition (#TCAC), pwgatsipa (#Pwgatsipa), hinds_house, cumc4palestine (#CUMC4Palestine), and barfnard (#Barfnard).
The protest began outside of SIPA with chants “Robert Kraft your hands are red” and “Hillel your hands are red” (video).
A little after 5:30, they begin marching toward Hillel. See post here.
Protesting at the corner near Hillel - video
NYPD put up barricades at the intersection of X and Y so that the protesters could not reach the Kraft Center (video, video). Almost all of the protesters are covered in masks and keffiyehs, presumably to hide their faces/identities (video).
Chants included “end the settler zionist state” (video), “Brick by brick, wall by wall, Israel will fall” (video), and “Globalize the intifada” (video). Some participants were wearing tape as arm bands – these are presumably the protest “security,” which they have at all of CUAD’s events.
Hillel you can’t hide, you invest in genocide (video)
Close to Hillel, a participant gave a speech (see the speech, posted on telegram). Part of the speech can be seen in this video.
At the end of the protest, the participants chant, “Make sure Hillel knows, we’ll be back” (video).
A handout given out calls for the boycott of the Institute for Global Politics and Kraft Center for hosting Barak Ravid “a zionist, pro-Trump journalist” (image). The other side of the handout complains about IGP and the Kraft center / HIllel (image).
The Barak Ravid event took place at Hillel. As the event began, several individuals walked out in protest. See videos here.
Brian Cohen, executive director of Columbia Barnard Hillel, summarized the protest in his email to the community the next day (here).
