On April 2, 2025 there were two occurrences of students chaining themselves as they demanded that trustees disclose which one(s) of them called ICE and gave Mahmoud Khalil’s name to the agency. This nonsensical demand was just an excuse to break the rules. In the late afternoon the university wrote in a public statement titled Update on Today’s Disruption at Campus Gate, “No member of Columbia leadership or the board of trustees has ever requested the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on or near campus.”
In the early afternoon students from ColumbiaJVP chained themselves to the gates outside of St. Paul’s Chapel on Amsterdam Avenue. After a couple of hours Columbia Public Safety officers cut the chains and the students were escorted off campus.
In the evening more students chained themselves to the Earl Hall gate on Broadway. At 10:30pm Columbia Public Safety officers cut the chains of some of the students and carried them off campus. A few students remained past the midnight.

Per the Columbia University’s public statement, disciplinary action will be taken against the students who violated Columbia rules: “We will follow the process established in the Rules of University Conduct for enforcing violations. Our focus is on preserving our core mission to teach, create, and advance knowledge while ensuring a safe campus for our community.”
