Introduction
Antisemitism in the guise of anti-Zionism and anti-Israelism has been a problem at Columbia for decades. However, since the Hamas-led massacre of Jews on October 7, 2023, the level of severe and pervasive hostility to Jews at Columbia and Barnard College increased by an order of magnitude. For a year and a half the campus has been roiled with aggressive rallies, encampments, disruptions of classes, vandalism, rule breaking all designed to harass Jews on campus (see our archive). Little has been done to stop the mayhem on campus, enforce rules, discipline the perpetrators and rein in anti-Israel indoctrination and propaganda emanating from the activist faculty.
Finally, the Trump administration has taken the exploding antisemitism in our society and particularly in academia seriously. As of the moment of this writing on March 20, 2025, $430M in grants have been frozen due to various Title VI violations with further repercussions to come.
Given the current situation, the following questions come to mind:
Why has Columbia administration failed to exercise control over the campus?
Who has the power and the ultimate responsibility to control the university and ensure that a welcoming educational environment is provided to all students and that all rules and laws are observed?
Why are those who have such responsibility and power are not being held accountable?
